I have known George since training command, USN. We flew together in the navy and in the early 1970’s we were reunited as fire bombing pilots. We are still close friends.
George presented me with a autographed copy of his book. I can vouch for the authenticity of his flying career and the stories therein. He is a very special man and is loved by his naval contemporaries and respected by all who ever flew with him.
He forwarded your pod cast and it reveals the true George
Good to hear from one of George’s squadron mates, William. We see why he is held in such high regard. Thanks for the comment.
Always a delight to hear George share his exuberance, whit, enthusiasm and unquenchable zest for life with eloquence and great intelligence. Your interview captured him at his best – he is a raconteur par excellence!
George is my father’s cousin, and I have many wonderful memories throughout my life starting with his visits to us in Montreal in the 1960’s when I was a young child and he was on leave from the navy. He would take us to Dairy Queen for ice cream in his sports car, and he drove it as if on the flight deck of a carrier. Later in my teens I came to know his lovely wife Rita and have been part of the family ever since. I recently celebrated with them in Vancouver the 50th anniversary of their having met, and it is always a joy to see their lifelong affection for each other.
It was a true pleasure to read his book, and as someone who knows him well I could imagine him reading every word. Even if you have never met George his book is a hell of a good read about a life well lived.
Thanks for sharing your memories, Mark. We wish we’d been along for the “flight” to Dairy Queen. Ha! Great fun.
