Hard to believe it’s less than a month until we pick up our people in Shannon and whisk them away north to home-away-from-home at the Old Deanery Cottages in Killala, County Mayo. Though it’s tempting to think about packing our bags right now and waiting three weeks for the airport shuttle, we are instead busy finalizing plans for this exceptional Eire Retour. While we want to keep an element of surprise about Retour details, we are thrilled at how all the disparate pieces have fallen magnificently into place. And–to be sure–there are some pieces that are just too good not to share.
Here’s a piece that came to us by chance. One of the Eire Retour participants was recently at a retreat and met an Irishman from Galway. She told him about the Retour and where she was headed in May. The man replied without any hesitation that the Eire Retour had “chosen the most beautiful part of Ireland and that she would fall in love with it.” Yes! We agree wholeheartedly.
Another bit we must share is that we have confirmed our reservation and will be feasting at the exquisite Idle Wall restaurant in Westport. We experienced the great fortune of happening upon the newly opened Idle Wall last September, where we met the award-winning chef Aine Minogue and enjoyed one of the most scrumptious meals we’ve ever tasted…anywhere. The croquettes alone are worth the trip.
Among the other treats in store for our Retour guests are a privately-chartered guided cruise on Lough Corrib featuring views of Ashford Castle and stops to explore island monastery ruins, an evening of feasting on foods foraged earlier in the day with local naturalist Denis Quinn, a day of putting it all in perspective with renowned historian Stephen Dunford, exploring the dream world with dream expert, Kathleen Duffy and an invigorating hike on the Corraun Peninsula led by prolific outdoorsman, John Quinn.
Add to the above a daily infusion of story, song, delicious locally-sourced foods, ample time for reflection, as well as time for raising a pint with new friends and there you have it: the Eire Retour takes wing. All for now. We’re off to pack our bags.
